Master of Science in Nursing -Leadership and Administration in Nursing (MSN-LAN)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Leadership and Administration in Nursing (LAN) program is a post-professional master’s degree program that prepares post-baccalaureate registered nurses to practice in nursing leadership and administrative roles in a variety of health care institutions.

The MSN-LAN program was created for registered nurses seeking career advancement opportunities through graduate education to be prepared for nurse executive positions, care/service line nurse executive roles, and primary care/population-based manager positions. Graduates will be prepared to effectively translate innovative practice models and expertly direct the delivery of health care across organizational models, as well as skillfully translate research and become an expert in using evidenced-based practice knowledge to direct individual and population health care.

The MSN-LAN program includes 30-credit hours of course work emphasizing the core management and executive competencies established by the American Organization of Nursing Leadership (AONL) and the Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing as established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the respective professional and accrediting bodies for leadership and graduate nursing education. Instruction is in an online format. Community partner mentored and instructor guided practicums will provide 500 hours of experiential learning that supports ‘real-time’ solutions to current health care issues affecting Texans.  

Graduates of the MSN-LAN program are required to meet professional competencies related to their focus area of study and are qualified to apply to take one or more of the following national certification examinations:

• American Organization of Nursing Leadership (AONL) Certification Exam - Executive Nursing Practice (CENP) or Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML)
• American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Certification Exam - Nurse Executive (NE-BC) or Nurse Executive, Advanced (NEA-BC)

The MSN-LAN program is offered as a part-time track, allowing students to determine how best to manage school, work, and lifestyle. The part-time track can be completed in 5 semesters. Students are required to be advised before each semester by a graduate advisor.

NOTICES

Our Master of Science in Nursing and Post Graduate Certificate Nurse Practitioner Programs meet the educational requirements for national certification in all states. Some states have unique regulatory requirements that are found on the NCSBN website. As a result of the varied requirements by state, we have elected to only accept students into our programs who reside in and hold a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Texas.
